Product Introduction

Cryogenic Wire Characteristics

Cryogenic wire is used to greatly minimize heat leakage from sensors and cryogenic systems and has a much lower thermal conductivity (higher resistivity) than copper wire. A common type of cryogenic wire is phosphor bronze. The wire is available in single lead, two lead, and four lead configurations. The four-lead configuration can be used as Quad-twist™ (two twisted pairs) or Quad-lead™ (ribbon). The gauge is 32 or 36 AWG and the wire is insulated with polyimide or polyvinyl formaldehyde (Formvar®). Other common cryogenic wires include manganese copper, nickel-chromium alloy heated wire, and HD-30 heavy-duty copper wire.

Single Strand Cryogenic Wire - WSL-32, WSL-36

Phosphor Bronze Wire

Non-ferromagnetic

Single Strand

32 and 36 AWG

Polyimide Insulation (WSL-32)

Formvar® Insulation, Clear (WSL-36)

Lake Shore Non-Magnetic (NM) Single Lead (SL) wire is phosphor bronze (CuSnP alloy) wire. The resistance of this wire has a relatively low dependence on temperature from room temperature to helium temperature.

WSL-32 can be used for sensor installations that require a stronger, more "rugged" lead.

WSL-36 wire is recommended for general sensor installations.

Stranded Leads - WCT-34

Silver Plated Copper

34 AWG

Teflon® Insulated

These low resistance twisted pairs of wire are ideal for extending the lead length of Lake Shore low temperature Hall sensors.

Duo-Twist™ Low Temperature Wire - WDT-32, WDT-36

Phosphor Bronze Wire

Non-ferromagnetic

Single pair twisted pair (2 wires)

Color coded (cathode green, anode clear)

Greatly minimizes pickup noise

32 and 36 AWG

Polyimide Insulation

Duo-Twist™ is a single twisted pair (2 leads) of 32 or 36 AWG phosphor bronze wire with a twist rate of 3.15 twists per centimeter (8 twists per inch). This wire is a good choice when there is a need to minimize any possibility of pickup noise on diode sensors or samples from induced currents through the leads.

Quad-Lead™ Low Temperature Leads - WQL-32, WQL-36

Phosphor Bronze Wire

Non-ferromagnetic

Four color-coded leads

32 and 36 AWG

Polyimide Insulation

Quad-Lead™ wire is a 4-wire "ribbon cable" that makes heat dissipation and lead trimming much easier than with individual wires. Using Quad-Lead™ wire makes it easy to create non-inductive (two-wire) windings for radiators and heaters. In addition, the wire is color-coded for easy lead identification and can be split into 2 pairs. Due to their low reluctance, Quad-Lead™ wires can also be used for standard 4-lead measurements in magnetic field applications.

Note: Quad-Lead™ leads are formed into "ribbon cables" using Bond Coat 999 bonding film. The adhesive will soften above 160 to 180 °C. The wire can be heated or used with a rotary abrasive. Individual wires can be separated by heat or by using a rotary abrasive mechanical wire stripper (Recommended: Eraser's RT2S Magnetic Wire Stripper).

Do not use any sharp blades to separate wires as this may cause damage.

Quad-Twist™ Low Temperature Wire - WQT-32, WQT-36

Phosphor Bronze Wire

Non-ferromagnetic

2 twisted pairs (4 wires), color coded

Minimizes pickup noise

Polyimide Insulation (WQT-32)

Formvar® Insulation (WQT-36)

Quad-Twist™ is 2 twisted pairs (4 leads) of 32 or 36 AWG phosphor bronze wire. Each pair contains 3.15 twists per centimeter (8 twists per inch) and 2 pairs are twisted at 1.57 twists per centimeter (4 twists per inch). This wire is a good choice when there is a need to minimize the pickup noise on the diode sensor or sample from the induced current through the leads. Use one twisted pair for sensor excitation and another twisted pair for sensor output voltage to greatly minimize electromagnetic noise pickup.
